Since I've been pregnant, bad smells have become almost impossible to live with. What might have been an unpleasant before suddenly smells like a combination of wet dog, garlic, spoiled chicken and feet, or a smell that I have fondly named "hot garbage". My boss thinks it's so funny that it's sort of caught on in the office. Well, I'm glad my sensitive sniffer can bring so much joy.
I also have discovered lots of things smell like green beans, even when no one is eating green beans. There is someone in my office who is notorious for warming up green beans and catfish in the building's microwave without any regard for how that smell lingers, so at first I just thought it was her. No, it's like the smell of green beans, my least favorite food in the WORLD, is silently stalking me wherever I go. I smell them at home; at work; at restaurants that DON'T' SERVE GREEN BEANS. It's the most bizarre phenomenon ever. And why couldn't it be something good smelling that haunts me? Roses, where are you? Fresh baked cinnamon roll scent, I know you've got to be around here somewhere. Lilac and magnolia I SEE YOU BLOOMING RIGHT OUTSIDE, yet you're not able to overpower the non-existent green beans?
Then yesterday I was walking to my desk and discovered the suite TV was paused on this commercial for TGI Friday's fried green beans:
At first I was all, OK you guys, this is really funny! I totally get this joke, it's because green beans are haunting me, right? Whew, that was a good laugh. But then I walked by 3 hours later and it was STILL ON THE SCREEN.
I walked to the TV to take a picture and said, "Those green beans have been on TV for like 3 hours now and I just had to take a picture because nobody will believe me otherwise." And my friend Kim said, "oh my gosh, I didn't even notice! Sorry! You can turn it off if you want!" and I said, "so what you're saying is that this was unintentional and the TV is ganging up with these mystery green beans to make my life miserable?"
What are the odds? Of all scenes in the plethora of commercials on local tv, it had to be paused on the green bean money shot. Sick.
And in other Austin family news, remember the jug of moldy lemonade that's been on our counter for months? The other day we finally addressed it:
Me: I sure wish I could make some of that grape kool-aid. Problem is, we don't' have a jug big enough.
Hubby: What about the one with the lemons?
Me: Um, it's dirty. Clearly.
Hubby: I've been waiting for you to clean it.
Me: I've been waiting for YOU to clean it!
Hubby: Well I don't know what to tell you.
Me: It's the most epic household chore standoff ever! Guess I won't be getting any grape kool-aid.
Hubby: Guess not.
Then....THEN...a miracle occurred. I was cleaning up the dishes and he puts on his shoes and an old shirt. I asked what he was doing and he said, "I'm going to go clean out that lemonade jug."
Then angels started singing! The best part of this whole thing is that I WON.
What was the last household project standoff that you won? I wanna hear how you celebrated.

I won by getting a divorce. Zing!
I know that's not what you meant but, zing anyways.
Ketchup. For me it was the smell of ketchup. I swear I could smell it through the bottle and avoided the aisle at the grocers where the ketchup was stored. Gack!!
Those damn green beans! Why do they hate you?! What a bunch of jerks.
I'm currently waiting for JT to empty the bathroom garbage. He takes out the kitchen garbage and always forgets the bathroom one. So it's overflowing with qtips, snotty kleenex, feminine products, an empty bottle of shampoo, empty tub of hair product and old tp rolls. I am refusing to do it, but now there's just garbage everywhere and I can't stand it. GAH!
Um, WTF? How did I not know that you're pregnant? I think someone has been slipping my drugs in my coffee. Anywho, congrats!!
LOVE THAT! We have those types of stand-offs all the time. I can't think of one right off the top of my head, but i'll think on it and be back....
I can't believe that the green beans are haunting you like that. I wish they would haunt me cause I'd love to have some of TGIFridays fried green beans right now!
I'm so glad you got your grape kool-aid!!!! It must have been really bad if he put on old clothes to remedy the situation.
I saw that Friday's commercial the other day and while green beans aren't my least favorite thing in the world, the idea of fried green beans makes me want to hurl a little. How strange that you should be taunted like that. I'm glad you got a picture!
Luckily, my husband just does pretty much whatever I ask...honest! He's a dear. (And I, like the first blogger, divorced the "other kind.") Probably not good advice, huh! I do my share of cleaning though. He takes out the garbage and picks up his socks. What more could I ask!
That shit is fucking nasty
That pregnancy sense of smell is crazy - I started HATING the smell of my husband's shaving gel! I guess it's a good thing we'd already made the baby at that point! Haha! :)
My problem was the opposite in that, I smelled something and wanted to eat it immediately. We would be driving home from dinner and I would smell grilled burgers in the neighborhood so then we would have to make some.
My household is a household of CONSTANY standoffs. I never win. Have you seen the movie "Date Night" yet? I was laughing so hard at all the wrong parts because my husband can NOT close a drawer, cabinet or door to SAVE HIS LIFE! Seriously, if I calculated how many minutes a day I spend walking around closing things I bet I could have cured cancer in the same amount of time. So sometimes I just grit my teeth an leave them all open. If you walk into our house, it looks like we have been robbed. This doesn't work. He never notices until I start screaming at him.
I love that of all things, you're being stalked by green beans. Priceless.
The dog poop war of 2010. I finally won by talking about how much I would love to take our daughter to play int the backyard, but no one had cleaned up the poop from the winter yet...
You know...it was only a matter of time before that jug also started to smell of green beans!
I am not pregnant of ever been but I have always been very sensitive to the smell of peppers, it doesn't matter if they are green peppers, or red or yellow, it is something that I can't control and I really hate the smell and even the taste.
Thoughts of a Career Woman
You totally win! Crazy about the green beans, I've never heard of that aversion. And can we get a timeout on microwaving catfish? Is that normal?
lmao!! So was the tv just froze or were your co workers playing a bad joke!
Woo hoo for the win.. I never win.. I cant do the stand off very long when the trash can is overflowing hha
Green beans and catfish? Pregnant or not...that is disgusting. right now it is the garage, which is his domain. I refuse and I wait. I can walk on his old camping stuff All. Day. Long!
My plan would have been: if you don't wash it out, I'm throwing it out and buying a new one that I will never, ever let you use for anything ever, ever again.
Because I am mean.
Sorry about the green beans. It was popcorn for me, but I normally love popcorn.
Haha! Score! Way to win that battle!
That's too funny about the green beans being on the tv for that long!
AMANDA RULES! You won!!! A battle won for women EVERYWHERE!!!
P.S. I know they are haunting you but I really love those deep fried green beans SO bad for me but every once in a while when I actually get to a TGIFridays I can't resist them.
We need to get you frebreeze coated surgical masks to wear around the world.
OK, so what's the plauzibility of this: you've been smelling green beans (and catfish) for so long, your nose hairs are infused with the scent, keeping that smell in your nostrils???
Whatdayathink?
Do you get upset or sick if we mention Green beans in our comments? My friend hated the smell of raw chicken for some reason when she was pregnant. Didn't realize it had a scent. BTW...I can totally relate to those conversaguments. My wife and i have 'em all the time. I usually lose.
Yay, I'm really glad you won the lemonade pitcher sitch. Isn't your husband supposed to clean these things, you are pregnant after all. I heart green beans. But I hate olives with a passion. The smell of them disturbs me now so who knows what would happen if I were pregnant.
Ok, I just went back and re-read your entry before this one...thank GOD you're not like 8 months pregnant and I have been a complete moron this whole time. CONGRATS, AMANDA!!! How wonderful and exciting!!
I love that you held out on the lemonade container. That is dedication and commitment at an epic level. A power of super wills. Incredible.
oh, you poor thing! I remember the bad smell thing clearly. When I was pregnant with Jason I was working in the Italian restaurant that is featured in my Happy Hour stories.
And some days the smells nearly killed me. I would have to run someone's food out and I would practically like toss it on the table so I could bolt outta there and dry heave a minute.
It ended with my first trimester coming to an end. I hope it's the same for you. Because 9 months of that shit woulda killed me.
smells are the worst when you are pregnant! I remember a cologne that my hubman wore that I loved before I was preggos but then when I was I wanted to throw up everytime he wore it....finally I just threw it out!
You guys just had an Everybody loves Raymond moment....haha that cracks me up!
I usually lose the standoffs of the household variety, mostly because my OCD can only take it for so long! ;) Other things though, (i.e. dog poop wars, etc) are won usually by me flat-out telling him "you brought the dog home, you are cleaning up after it!". That one works. But I'm pretty lucky if I ask nicely 99% of the time he'll do it. In a timely manner is another story though. ;)
OMG the smells, the smells...yeah, they were bad. My BFF didn't go through it like I did but let's just say it was a very good thing I was working from home at that point. I don't know HOW I would have dealt with coworkers.
As for household stand-offs...we've only had one in the past couple of weeks and that was wiping the counters down. I lost. I gave in. But I threw a huge fit. Apparently, PMS makes me something of a bitch. Hm. Who knew? But I think that after I pack like the 2938th box, I will be ready for him to pack a few...and might just wait until it happens!
Smells were always heightened when I was pregnant. Most of them just made me want to puke, good or bad didn't matter. I wish I could have turned off my nose.
The only way I have ever won a household project standoff was to get divorced.
If my office smelled like green beans, I'd have to get a new job.
Congrats on winning the standoff! When those happen at my house, I usually get to the point that I can't take it anymore and do it myself.
I thought I commented on this the other day, but obviously I didn't. I wanted to walk around with my nose plugged my entire first trimester. I love that you have an aversion to green beans. I have never heard of that before. And I LOVE green beans. The mommy sense of smell is amazing. I still have a very strong sense of smell to this day. I had a chick that I worked with in a small office that used to microwave broccoli! Talk about smelling like hot garbage. I actually yelled out one day, what the hell smells like shit. I had no idea it was her food!!!
