It comes as a relief that pretty soon he's going to be eating solids regularly. We have started him on a few foods occasionally, and most recently a little oatmeal almost every day. I still nurse him before any foods so he can get the "good stuff" first. But in a few short weeks, these foods will give him additional vitamins and nutrients in addition to my milk. I feel like I'm off the hook a little.
You see, the amount of breast milk I've pumped has always been a "thing". It's a source of constant anxiety for me, made even worse because our daycare provider kept asking for more. I was afraid of getting to a point where I couldn't pump enough to keep up with him. And what's the worse that could happen -- formula makes up the amount I can't provide? That's not a big deal (to a normal, non-crazy person).
I talked before about where I pump at work. I had several people comment that it was so unfair I had to pump in a closet while sitting on the floor. I completely disagree. Knowing the state of breast feeding, I'm extremely lucky to have an out of the way place that's not a bathroom. It was my choice to sit on the floor because in all honesty, the room was kind of cramped and it was sort of awkward to have a chair and not have a table where I could set my pump.
The other day, our secretary cleaned out the closet and when I went in later, she'd rolled in a chair, a table and a radio for me. She made a new "Do Not Disturb" sign for the door and put all my magazines in a cute wicker basket. It really moved me that she took the time to do it, knowing how much breast feeding means to me.

I mean, I sort of dig it. It's the Caddy of pumps. I was excited when I got it because I thought, "hooray! No more worries about milk!"
Until his bottles started increasing. Until I realized it's pretty difficult to pump at work every 3 hours. Until I saw that piddly 3 oz bottle after 15 minutes of pumping and that little voice in my head said, "You can't keep up."
I'm getting resentful of that pump. I hate that I have to be connected to it so much. I hate all the cords to plug in, the parts I have to wash. I hate that after my baby goes to bed, I have to drag out that beast and pump instead of doing things I enjoy doing. I hate having to carry it in every day, or remembering to stick the cord in the bag, or making sure the bottle cooler has frozen.
On the other hand, when I make the bottles at night with milk I've pumped, I feel very proud of myself for keeping it up.
I'm not planning on giving it up. My goal is one year and then I'll probably have to since I think I'm only legally entitled to all those breaks for one year. I'm OK with that, too. The pump is a necessary evil in my life, and I'll keep doing battle with my old foe until he's weaned.
It's a labor of love, but I won't be sad to see that pump go back into the closet.
What's your labor of love? What do you resent, but love at the same time?
Oh, hey, by the way, I did a review of a nursing cover called Baby Bond over at my friend Laurie's blog (Steals & Deals for Kids). She's giving away a cover! check it out!

I could never even get 3 oz at any point. That was so sweet of your co worker to make that room nicer for you, isn't it sad that we even have to find places like that and businesses don't think hmm let's provide a place for moms who have to pump?
I have so many friends in a similar situation. It really is a second job. I am proud of you for keeping it up. It is certainly one of MANY of a mother's sacrifices and not anything that dear old Dad can help with. And although we as women should keep our traps shut about if other mothers do or don't pump (why is it any of our business anyway??) you can sit back and be proud that you gave Baby Blogworthy this gift. And then you can trash that pump! ;-D (I mean, you wouldn't really. I'm sure it was expensive...but wouldn't it be cool to take a baseball bat to it?)
Oh, I am so with you on this. Yesterday I was traveling for work across the state, so my hub had to take off work and drive me, so that I can pump on the road. Despite the nursing cover, I think the passing-by truck driver still got a nice show... and everytime I go into the office, I have to sit in the CEO's office that is obviously not set-up for pumping and think who else may have the keys to his room and may come in... Plus, I hate that the entire office knows, when I am going pumping, since I have to drag that entire backpack with me. And, yes, washing those parts EVERY SINGLE TIME get old so-so quickly!!!
I quit pumping at 8 months - he got formula during the day. I just couldn't stand being attached to that thing for one minute more.
We nursed morning and night to 14 months but the pump, I hear you. It's a beast.
I remember going through this with my first child when I worked full time. My work had an unfinished area with a door that they put 1 chair in. That's it. It was totally bare bones but it worked, I guess. And it was a quiet place. Pumping was always so stressful because I never felt like I was getting enough and it was such a pain to do it every couple hours.
I'm glad that you have a nicer spot to pump.
I really think it's amazing that you have kept it up this long. I bf my kids, but said that if I had to pump, I probably would have quit b/c I hated that so much. It takes a lot of dedication to do what you are doing!
All I can say is keep it up, girl!!! I'm going on 7+ months here and although I stay home now, I did pump at work for 2 months and it was hard as hell. I give you credit for pushing through! I always found it helped me to get more out to look at pics and videos of my baby on my phone.
I pump in the morning, and I HATE it. I hate washing all the little parts. So annoying. When you get down on yourself about it, just remember: that milk is made for your baby and no formula can replicate what your body creates. But, that doesn't mean I wouldn't be down for a pump smashing party when we're all done ;)
I could barely get 3 oz so I totally understand. I wasn't able to pump or breastfeed due to Paige's metabolic disorder (PKU). I so give you credit for doing what you do. I don't know if I could've done that. I really think that it is pretty amazing that the secretary did that for you as well.
I love that you have co-workers that do something so nice for you! I don't know about the pumping woe's yet and that's the one thing my friends haven't complained about yet.
I think it's so incredibly sweet that she made up that room for you, but I'm really sorry you aren't getting the goods you were hoping for.
Good job!! I had to pump in a closet at work too...I agree, it totally beats a bathroom. And to whoever fixed up that closet?..that is sooo nice!
That's so sweet of your secretary to make that room a little nicer for you! Keep up the good work! :-)
i can understand why you resent it, but at same time so glad it works for you AND you have a place and support.
This really brings back some mega office-pumping memories! I had the caddy of pumps too! I used to have to go into the office, and speak to collegues over speaker while pumping! LOL!!
I'm really quite proud of you for keeping up with this. I couldn't, so I didn't even start.
Right now, if I were to be honest, I am resenting Wee 'Burb's stubbornness. And also? I love her for being her own chick and doing what she wants when she feels like it. But this not walking thing is making me mad. Having to take time off work to meet with therapists and social workers just to have them tell me that she's probably just stubborn is very frustrating.
Ugh the pump. I pumped exclusively for 5 weeks while my twins were in the NICU, but I had egads of milk compared to the miniscule amount they were eating. But you really start to resent the pump. Even with my 3rd, I only pumped so that I could have enough for her cereal, but I would only remember when I was going to bed, and I'd have to drag it out.
Kudos to you for doing what you have for this long. It's a wonderful feeling.
Wow, I am so impressed that you're sticking to it! I think breast feeding is so important (but i am not a mom, so what do i know!?)
Wow I can't even imagine how annoying it must be to have that thing on your breast for so much time every day. Great job on keeping it up! And so sweet of your colleague to help you out!
Oh, Amanda. I can SOOOO relate. I battled the ounces for 11 months with a baby who wouldn't latch, exclusively pumping every 2 hours for the entire time. I bought the $3K hospital-grade to do it. I hated it. Until I would see my non-nursing baby drink it. And now Zach is turning a year old tomorrow and I realized something: he hasn't had a cold, a sniffle, an ear infection, a stomach virus...I can count the number of times he has even just spit up in the past year on one hand. And I thought to myself just yesterday that I did that. Me. My hard work and dedication to give him the best. And you will have the same experience when you are finished. Congrats on making it this far. And congrats to Baby Blogworthy for having a mom who cares enough to keep going when the going gets tough. So many babies don't...
I hated my pump just as much. You are so much better than I was for being willing to stick it out an entire year. I only made it six months with both of mine.
I was lucky with my first child, there was a special area for pumping mothers to go. It was convenient and completely accepted, but I still felt awkward.
When my second came along I was a nurse and had to pump twice during my 12 hour shifts in the ICU family room. You know, the room where the doctors and nurses take patient's families to tell them it's bad. Although I only used it when it was empty, I still hated pumping in there.
I told my husband if we were going to have a third child then I was going to take a year off so I never had to pump again!
I can relate, but I don't pump every 3 hours. I pump once in the morning during the week and twice at work and thankfully have a nice place to do it in. Regardless it is hard work and takes a lot of time. I'm sick of lugging my pump around as well, but what keeps me going is knowing I'm doing the right thing for my baby and our family. I too am one that is crazy about ounces especially in the beginning! Things are getting easier! Keep up the great work!
It was so very sweet of her to fix up your room for you.
I loved and hated breastfeeding. I committed to doing it for a year, and I did....but I never had those special bonding feelings that everyone talks about. And I never could pump, even with the really expensive, professional ones, which was frustrating. But in the end, I'm still glad that I did it for that year.
