Magic Mike and the Olympics

It's becoming increasingly obvious that I'm going to need more hours in a day to keep up with all the fab blogs I'm finding lately. I think I'm up-to-date on the ones I've been following, but now I've got a ton more I found by reading said blogs. You guys -- quit being so funny and entertaining. It's counter-productive.

Remember the other day when I told y'all about my really awesome new Wednesday night dinner plans? I just found out that a person Hubby and I know, let's call him "Todd", really and truly hates Magic Mike. Apparently, Dave was at a place where MM was entertaining one night and MM stayed at his table a little too long, which really annoyed Todd to the point of hatred. He said he will stay away from Beefs from  now on because apparently Magic Mike gives him unspeakable, debilitating anxiety*.

Really, Todd? Really? What exactly is it that annoys you so much about Magic Mike? Is it the card tricks? The magic? The fun puzzles to work out while you eat? The family-friendly jokes? The awesome balloon animals?

My dear friend Allison and her Daffy Duck balloon animal.

*Those are my words, not his, but I think hatred and fear are super close cousins, like so close they couldn't get married in WV.

So I am really baffled that a grown man would outwardly express his hatred of a mild-mannered restaurant magician whose only crime was interrupting this guy's dinner.  And Magic Mike doesn't even dress like a clown. Todd is dead to me.

Tonight are the Olympics, and I would know that even it I didn't read about it on several separate amazing blogs: (Salt Says , Magnolias and Mimosas and Be Awesome Instead who had a whole series about Canada this week in preparation for the wondrous events).

You guys? I am so in love with the Olympics. I always have been. My earliest memory of the Olympics was when I was 7 and it was Valentine's Day or around that day, and I got sick with some sort of bug. I got to stay home from school, watch the Olympics all day and got a crimping iron for Valentine's Day. Best. Day. EVER.

The Olympics inspire me to be a better athelete, which is saying a lot since I truly am the most unathletic person alive, have no coordination and am very lazy. During the 2008 summer Olympics, Hubby and I watched all the women's beach volleyball matches and I'm all, phhhssst I can do that and get a hot bod in the process! So we ran out and bought a volleyball to play on the sand court at our apartment complex and I was so ready to get totally ripped but it turns out that I'm really terrible at volleyball.

And I'm not gonna lie and tell you I wasn't moved to buy a pair of ice skates during some ill-adviced late night online shopping during another Winter Olympics.

And who can forget the 2000 Syndey Olympics when Michael Phelps busted onto the scenes with those tight abs and sexy arms. I had just started as a grad teaching assistant, teaching speech classes. All the TAs went out for lunch one afternoon and all the ladies in our group could do was watch in awe as Michael Phelps wiggled through the water with that itty bitty Speedo. Le sigh. (I love you Hubby.)

Besides all the hot bodies, there is also the element of "the whole world is coming together and putting aside its differences to celebrate the global language of sport and competition" but the hot bods trump that a little bit.

What's not to like about it? I bet Todd hates the Olympics as much as he hates Magic Mike.

This post is a little jumpy because 1) it's Friday and 2) it's 30 degrees outside IN FLORIDA and 3) it's 85 degrees in my office. My brain is a little melty and hyperactive simultaneously.

Who else is excited about the Olympics? If you wrote a blog post about it, put it in the comments.

Amand, you crack me up girl. I have been in love with the Olympics since I was a little girl watching Mary Lou Retton (yes, I'm old...shut it!) Anyway, what is it about the Olympics that makes people all "Go America!" and "I have ALWAYS been a big 100 yd sprint ice skating fan!"? Love it!

Not a huge Olympics fan, although I was when I was a little girl and two summers ago with Team Phelps. However, I know just how you feel about keeping up with the blogs! I feel the same way. If only I could sit around all day and do nothing but read my new friends' blogs.

I'm excited to see who lights the torch - I'm hoping it's MJF! That daffy duck is adorable, by the way. Stopping over from Lady Bloggers :)

You had me at crimp iron! I used to love the Olympics when I was younger and watched it with my fam but I find now that it doesn't have the same excitement or purity as it used to. I always find myself rooting for someone only to be dissappointed after the fact that they were on steroids or whatever it may be but because of your post I'm going to try and get into it-just for you Amanda!!! Enjoy Magic Mike next time you see him and maybe even give him "Todd's" phone number!

I'm watching the opening ceremonies right now and I'm all prepared to scream at the tv when the US comes out!! I am so excited. Like probably a little too excited. Mike doesn't understand.

I used to dream that I could be a figure skater. One time I even tried to jump on figure skates. I fell and broke my face on the ice. So that's pretty much where my skating career ended.

Todd does not sound like someone I could be friends with. Who the eff would have a problem with anyone that could create a work of art such as that Daffy Duck balloon? That thing is amazing! I wonder if Magic Mike does weddings?

I absolutely love the Olympics. It doesn't matter if it's the summer or winter games, I watch them all. For the next two weeks I will seriously, eat, sleep, work and watch the olympics. I dvr (previously taped) all of it!

Wait..what?? You CAN'T get married in WV if you're cousins?? That's not what I heard. It's certainly not true in KY as I have a high school friend who married her cousin and now she's Kelly Harrod-Harrod. True story. I can't make this crap up.

OK straight up...I can't totally dis Todd for not digging on MM. I am one of those people who doesn't like to be...um...bothered when I'm out to eat. Like when the wait staff come and sit down with us while they take our order? I'm completely appalled. And I've been known to get up and walk away from a table when one of the bartenders popped a squat and "stayed too long". Todd - I got your back. The only place I want to see latex is in my bedroom. But you're still my girl, Amanda. I just can't buy into Magic Mike...y'know how it goes.

I'm actually watching the opening ceremony right now. We burned through that first bottle of champagne AWFULLY fast. They hadn't even started marching the nations in yet! Very sad about the Georgian luge athlete. That spot should have been piled with mattresses. Grr.

Thanks for stopping by my blog. Your comments totally cracked me up.
This will be my favorite Olympics as I am Canadian and I live very close to Vancouver. I thought they did a great job on the opening ceremonies. Made me feel all glowy.
I also like that it may make some people realize that we don't live in Igloos. And on the West Coast here it rarely even snows!

Hi! Stopping by from SITS!

I wrote about the Olympics yesterday on my blog! I definitely agree, they are incredibly inspiring. It's so amazing to see people dedicating their lives so whole heartedly in pursuit of something. I especially love it when the athletes use their place in sports to help others as well.

Have a great Saturday and have fun watching the Olympics!

I've realized I left out a few Canadian awesomeisms so there just might be more coming next week! :)

Opening ceremony did it's job! I'll forgive Canada for the torch malfunction, since now I'm so super psyched for the events to start today!!! (Not super excited at NBC for putting the West Coast on delay even though we're in the same freakin time zone, come on!). Here's some extra !!!!!!!! in case I didn't use enough!!!!

Courtney - Thanks for stopping by!

Tina - Did you watch the speed skating today? I hear USA brought home some BLANG. I missed it for a basketball game. boooo.

SarahBeth - Team Phelps is the best Team. :) I spent all morning just reading blogs and it was AMAZING.

Renee - Enjoyed your blog and the tips you provided! Thanks for stopping by!

My Husband's - CRIMPING IRONS were the best! Wish they were still in style. You're such a sweetheart -- thanks for trying for me!

SALT - Yours sounds like my figure skating career. I went skating ONCE and then the next day couldn't walk and thus ended my figure skating career.

mom2three - Isn't it? He did an awesome job! I do love the summer Olympics a lot, too. The gymnastics are my FAVORITE (and I just LOVE the summer!)

Allyson - You crack me up -- I need to blog about the time that Kelsey (hubby) and I went to get our marriage license and they asked us if we were related. AND I can see how you would agree. I, too, don't like when people annoy me while I'm trying to eat, but those people don't make me BALLOON ANIMALS, so I make concessions for that.

Itsybitsy - Your blog was awesome, it was my pleasure! Vancouver looks AMAZING. the Olympics might be the best marketing they ever had!

Lisa, I'll have to stop by and read about it. Thanks for stopping by!

Hutch - Can't WAIT to read more! I'm pretty much sold on Canada.

Wym - I could never hate you. :) But you're dead to me. ;) Just kidding...as I said to Allyson, I agree typically that I Don't like to be bothered during dinner, especially if I'm tired, hungry or hormonal. But....daffy balloons!

haha I agree that a crimping iron and the Olympics sounds like truly a wonderful day! Makes me wanna crimp my hair right now [while watching the Olympics]!

I love the summer olympics like crazy but winter is ... meh. I'd rather watch my husband embarrass himself on the Wii downhill skiing than watch real athletes. I think that groups me with only 1% of the population. You have the other 99% watching with you.

I always watch the Olympics and this time around it was held in my town. I waited for Celine and Shania at both the opening and the closing ceremonys but they didn't appear; don't know why not. But there were other Canadian entertainers; actually a few too many at both. Anyway its all history now.
