When I get up in the AM and get my face on, I like to listen to a little tunage to get me moving. The noise helps me block out all the anger and resentment I feel toward my alarm clock. Most morning shows are just atrocious. There's all the loudness and corny jokes and constant jabber and snarky callers. I mean what on earth is important enough to talk bout at 7 in the morning, to actually pick up your phone and talk to another human being before your first cup of coffee? And it's always just the most inane conversation. And PS -- where's the music? I'm sorry, I thought I was listening to a radio station that PLAYS MUSIC. It's like the same places that have the "no commercial workday" have the terrible morning shows with no music. They have to get all the talk out before 9. Please, spare me. All I want is a little Kelly Clarkson or Billy Joel to make the transition between sleep and work a little easier.
Let's talk for a second about the morning show hosts...God bless you if you are one. I mean no disrespect, not trying to be snarky. But do these people have friends in real life? They are so freaking annoying. What kind of tragedy have you had in your life that makes you not only have a face but also a personality fit for morning radio? They are like the people at a party who think they are the life of the party and tell terrible jokes and get all get all snarky with other guests under the guise of being "funny" and "real", but really everybody just hates them. That's morning radio. And they always have names like "Wolfman" and "Thunder".
And if the all-talk-no-music-terrible-host format isn't bad enough, every show has some game to get people to tune in. The prize is always sub-par and they pump it up like it's the greatest thing ever. "Hey! Call in and answer some impossible questions and you get a family pack to Hungry Howie'sPizza Buffet!"
So now I've established how much I hate morning radio, I'll tell you about the radio station I listen to currently that is honestly delightful. Good mix of music. Decent -- and sometimes even entertaining -- hosts. Games that I actually *enjoy* listening to. I really thought I'd died and gone to morning show heaven. Until recently.
The crew just started a new game called "Take it From Me". It starts with some cheesy 60s game show music. The two hosts, Storm and Chris, and the mid-morning DJ, CeCe, all give definitions to an obscure word. Two are wrong, one is right. They all sound "legitimate". So the person calls in and they have to choose which definition is correct. Sounds easy, right? I mean, we do live in the age of iPhones and wireless internet. You just get online and get a little help from my friend and yours, Mr. Googlebox. If it's that easy, why have they not had a winner for at LEAST a week! People are really and truly that stupid. I tried it one morning with my phone and found the answer before they read the last definition.
I know, you're all saying, "Why are you being so snarky? Just go ahead and call in already and win yourself a ticket to the botanical garden?" But you see, I can't. I physically can't talk to someone that early. My brain doesn't work fast enough to get the words out of my mouth. Sad but true.
I'm hoping and praying for the day when this stupid game ends and another game starts. And so I don't have to hear Chris say "good morning Sheesh" instead of "Cece" ever again.
Do you guys have a favorite station? How's that working out for you? Do you like to talk to people in the morning?

I hate mornings. It's gotten somewhat better since I had my baby and she's happy in the mornings, but sometimes, before my coffee and before the sun rises, even that makes me mad. I've started to just watch the news, isn't that sad? It's a local fluffy news, nothing too heavy. It's that or my iPod. The morning shows are HORRENDOUS.
I am definately not a morning person. I have been lucky the last couple of weeks in not having to get up early on most days, but I am also not making money! Soon I will join you in hating those early morning DJs, and you know our selection in radio stations Huntington...
I'm not sure if you can get Canadian internet stations on your Americanized internet over there but, if you can, you should check out BOOM 97.3. The Humble and Colleen morning show is often really funny. And the music is great. All 80's and 90's. I actually really like it and I also normally have a strong hatred for morning shows.
There's a station here called Virgin radio and I had to stop listening to it in the morning because they had this inane contest where you had to phone in and say "99.9 Virgin Radio" as many times as you could in 10 seconds and you would get $100 for each time you said it. I couldn't listen to it because I would get all stressed out and I was always like, GO! FASTER! and would almost have a stroke. I actually stopped listening when one girl phoned in and they told her what to say and to say it EXACTLY and she went super fast but didn't say it right once and they were like, "You didn't get one right. Why didn't you listen?" and she's like, "What?" and I sort of felt bad for her but also felt that how could you seriously not get ONE right?! It's not a hard game!
Anyways....longest comment ever.
I am also not a morning person. My husband works from home and therefore gets up after I leave most likely due to my unplesantness. I can't help what I say before 8 am. And please do not try to be cheery during that time period. I only listen to the radio on the way to work and I typically avoid the talking and just look for whichever station is actually playing a song.
This is the reason I had a Sirius subscription for about a year--I was so freaking annoyed with the stupidity of the morning show hosts and all those evil, annoying car commercials that, while memorable, guaranteed I would never buy a thing from them on principle.
Then there came Hank. 99.9 FM up here in Tallahassee and the surrounding area. Hank has the occasional commercial, yes, but no morning show. They have almost no "shows" at all, and for that I love them. (Saturday nights they'll broadcast live from a local blues club and Sunday mornings they'll have a hosted hour of Jimmy Buffet which I actually like, if I'm awake that is). Plus, they play "everything".
My boyfriend is the only person I can stand talking to in the mornings... and even then it's usually in monosyllabic rarr's as I stumble towards the shower.
I think people keep getting it wrong because no one is made to talk to other people that early in the morning.
The thing is, there are those of us who understand it, and listen to music and drink coffee and steer clear of other breathing life forms, and there are those who don't get in. Those are the people that become morning hosts and call into their programs, too sleepy to realize Google is our friend.
Says me at 9:30am, still yawning and wiping sleepies from my eyes. At work. Morning? Blech.

SOOOOO not a morning person. Even with 4 kids, being a teacher...my hubs leaves the house before 5 am daily. FIVE IN THE MORNING!!! When I was in HS, my mom worked nights so she got in late and slept in. We used to fight EVERY morning b/c neither of us were mornin peeps. It got to the point where she would set 3 alarms across my room to wake me up and if I missed the bus I would have to bike to school. I actually scheduled my classes so that I had something I was halfway interested in 1st thing otherwise it was a sure thing that I would fail it. Even as a grown-up, getting myself and kids ready for school in the morn, I talk to them only enough to tell them to change their clothes so they match or to stop sitting in the floor naked. I have my cuppa and the random shuffle going on my puter media player in the living room on LOUD so that the music fills the space that eventually leads to nastiness and cursing in the morning.
If I don't have to get up before 5:30, I'm OK with mornings. I just don't want some cheerful chirper caterwolling to me. (AKA husband Rick) He thinks morning is an excellent time to talk, talk, talk...It's a trial. Just hand me a Diet Coke and shut up, please. (I always try to be polite.)
I am a morning person as long as it is just smiling and exchanging pleasantries. I have playful kittens the act extra cute in the mornings while I'm getting ready that put me in a good mood.
BUT, if someone sees me come in to work, follows me to my desk, and starts asking me work-related questions before I can even log on, my happiness goes out the window and I go into a rage the rest of the day.
I've always HATED that. I listen to the radio for music. M-U-S-I-C. That's it.
And it seems apparant that the best time for that is at three in the morning. As far as a morning commute, you're up the creek.
I am one of those scary morning people. Give me about 10 minutes after I wake up and I'm chipper and obnoxious and people probably want to punch my face in.
That said, I hate talk radio. The morning shows around here suck. It seems like they are always doing interviews with strippers and other ridiculous things like that. So I just listen to my iPod. Or my husband puts on Squawk Box because he's weird and the people's voices on there lull him back to sleep.
I feel you on this. Husband loves our morning show here in Portland, and frankly I just want a cd with preselected music. No matter how "funny" the radio DJ's are, I won't find anything humourous about them at 5 am.
one of the things that i find funniest in life and what you do so well is really examine the normal, everyday things, and expose their ridiculousness. :)
i think my favorite line in this was the one about having the face and personality to be a morning radio host!
thanks for joining in!!
Radio personalities make me feel stabby, no matter the time of the day or night. I think they should all be replaced by robot monkeys.
I hate the talky talky. Play some music!! The morning thing is better since having Alex. The radio thing still enrages me though.
Oh how I hate mornings! It doesn't matter how late I sleep. Our morning show that I listen to isn't too bad, but they end up talking about sex a lot and I have to turn it off because the kids are in the car. The DJ always tried to use code words, but still my kids are not that dumb. My mornings would be much better if my ghetto ass car had a cd player in it. Then I could listen to DMB all morning and be happy! Luckily my commute is super short!
I know exactly how you feel, I can't handle all of the chit chat in the am, while in the car. I just want to hear my rocking 80's music, preferable Huey Lewis and the news lol

I used to date a morning radio dj guy...and we were roommates with two other radio guys. You have never heard three louder people in a house. Seriously. With that fake voice thing...yeah.
