Newsflash: It's hot

So guess what, y'all? It's really hot out! Like record breaking hot! Because of that, the media are crawling like cockroaches to my garage to this particular sensational story. I mean I'm sure eventually someone will come up with a new angle for it! OR NOT. Because it's the same old story every single summer. Guess what, people? We live in FLORIDA and it's AUGUST. Heat is hardly newsworthy AT ALL. It seriously burns me up NO PUN INTENDED.

Here's how it goes: media calls, one of us takes it. They say, effervescently, "Hi, it's Amber/Ashley/Jennifer from [insert student radio station or newspaper here] and it's hot out! so we want to do a story about how to stay cool! Is there a doctor who is available to talk to us?" Then we call and bug the emergency department or an emergency medicine doctor; not like they aren't busy enough tending to sick people in emergencies. The emergency people tell us the same old crap that your Mom told you growing up: Stay inside during the hottest hours, drink lots of liquids, use sunscreen,  so on and so forth. I mean it's not brain surgery, people. It's staying cool. There's no science to it.

One of my coworkers got one today and asked who I'd talked to last time. I decided next time I'm going to  tell them I'm the expert and then read, verbatim, from either our online health encyclopedia or WebMD. You know, maybe I'll just take the story from the same publication that was written last year and read it to them. They can quote themselves. Wouldn't that be fun and inventive!?!?!?!?

Or I could say, "why don't you just go ahead and reprint last year's article? Nothing has changed.

Or I could lie completely and say, "you know what, actually, its' amazing you called today because they are releasing this brand new device called the 'personal air-conditioning unit'. It's the latest and greatest. It's a big bubble lined with effervescent liquid that works to cool your body. You can just walk around and do everyday tasks and not worry about the heat! It's genius! What will they think of next!? I'll definitely try and find somebody to talk to you about this!" and then block that number from my phone.

Of course, I'm just kidding. I would never do that, and will keep finding sources for all these perky little students. I dont' want to crush their journalistic dreams too fast.

Oh thank goodness I read this post today. For some reason it's really warm here too and sitting outside wearing 8 layers of clothing and a wool cap and drinking cup after cup of hot chocolate didn't really seem to be doing anything to combat the problem.

Yeah man it is hott. This has been the hottest NC in forever. You should totally become an expert on giving advice for what to do when it's really hot.

I feel a lot sorry for you being preggers in that heat. I vividly remember that torture. Stay cool friend.

That would be so annoying! I hate getting the same questions over and over at work so I can only imagine getting that phone call over and over.

Crush those dreams! Stupidity must be squashed.

I think you should just make up new ways to stay cool. Like, cover yourself in orange juice, it's better than sunscreen.

You are obviously providing a public service to your fellow citizens, because most of us wouldn't know WHAT to do in the heat!! Very funny post....I always laugh at those news/radio people when it gets too hot or too cold.

Sorry to say, I live in California and we are having one of the mildest summers in recent history!

i despise the media for that reason. when it reaches 100 degrees here in NorCal, it's the leading story on every news station. or when it rains, it's the end of the damn world.
and you live in florida, where it's SUPPPOSED to be hot in august....sheesh media. must be a slow murder/death day.

I feel your pain (the heat *and* dealing with a crapton of stupid). So...here's hoping you get to spend most of your midday hours indoors enjoying the a/c!

This heat has to suck for you. My SIL is going to pop any minute and she told her doctor yesterday that she just can't be pregnant anymore. And guess what they told her... One more week! I am surprised that my SIL didn't bitch slap her doctor at that moment. Hang in there!

And you know it is a slow news day when they are trying to run the "how to stay cool in the heat" story.

I couldn't agree with you more on this topic. I live in Texas and could do without the takemybreathaway heat, but we get the same ol' reports year after year. Much like the "ARCTIC BLAST" reports we get in January when temps drop below 40 degrees.

We have the same news story here every summer! Fancy that! What's really sad is that there are actually some people who really have no idea how to cool down. My grandma's gentleman friend, bless his heart, thinks that if he turns on the a/c in his bedroom and then uses a fan in the hallway and then OPENS HIS SCREEN DOOR, that his house will stay cool. My grandma won't even go down to his house anymore because it's so hot. Though, this is more of an old person thing than an "I'm too mental to hydrate myself properly." thing. :)

It's been nasty humid and hot here in So Cal...ugh. I feel your pain.

And I love you aren't into crushing dreams...not too quickly anyways ;)

I know that it is way to hot for me. I lived in Nevada for 10 years and the heat was never as intense is it is now in the south. Of course it is supposed to be hot here, but the humidity is what is doing us in down here. I have been thinking of going back to Vegas where 100 degrees in the dry heat is totally better than 80 degrees with the humidity.
I hate watching the news because it is always the same thing over and over. Weather, Murder, Sports and it all starts back over.
Oh well, I know that you can handle all of those someday to be Journalists. Take care and try not to get to hot with the baby and all. TTYL

First off I laughed really hard when you said "Lunch Lady Arms' In your comment on my page - I call them Bingo arms but yours gives the same great mental picture

That being said I feel the same way about this. I live in Alabama... IT'S HOT we get it... enough already!!!

Seriously - AC and Ice Water it's about all I want right now! I don't need the stupid news people telling me what I need. I guess they have to cover all the bases for the ding dongs in our states though.
