Yesterday I talked about my idea for ghost tours, which won't work because I'm lazy and not in a place where people would
Thus a dream was dreamed. A dream of our very own hot dog cart.
Hot dogs are, like, the cheapest thing to fix. That's why there are twice as many hot dogs as hamburgers at cookouts -- look next time, it's a fact.
Hot Dog Cart
First we'd have to buy a hot dog cart. This is by far the biggest expense, but also will pay for itself. There's some term in economics for that, I think, but guess who doesn't know much about economics? Anyway. I browsed Ebay and found this lovely cart for only $400. And it's nostalgic. You know what students love even more than cheap stuff? Kitsch.
Even the seller knows what a gem he's got on his hands:
"Theres [sic] nothing like this full-service pushcart to deliver nostalgic charm and modern convenience," he proudly proclaims. That's correct sir, NOTHING like it.
The cart comes with a hot dog roller, a two lidded steaming/warming trays, a beverage cooler, a service shelf and three inserts "for condiments such as chili and sauerkraut."
Then we go on to the basics of any good hot dog business. I just spent an hour researching how to buy wholesale hot dogs and finally found them (Bee Tee Double You, if you want to find wholesale hot dogs on Google, you have to use the keyword "bulk foods, hot dogs"). I can get some Oscar Mayer's, a case of 330, for $110. Now that I'm thinking it through, maybe bulk hot dogs aren't a good idea, as I have no space to keep them. Other than my fridge. Can you imagine if somebody came over and looked in my fridge and they were all, oh, so you like hot dogs? Awkward. So if worst comes to worst, I'll just buy some at Walmart for 99 cents for 12. Buns are 89 cents for 8. *high quality* is what we'll be known for.
Then there are a whole bunch more variables, like how much mustard costs, if I'll be serving relish or sauerkraut, and how many hot dogs we'll really need. And I dont' have time for all that right now, so I'll get to the really brillant part: Location, location, location.
During regular school days through the semester, from 11 till 2, we'll push that little bad boy around trolling from customers. What more perfect lunch can you think of for rushed, poor students? So that's 3 hours out of the day. Then when the sun sets, our hot dog cart will become a beacon for drunk bar flies. Picture if you will: 3 a.m. You've been dancing and drinking and it's time to go home. Nobody is sober enough to drive to Taco Bell and nothing else is open. Suddenly, like an angel made out of streel, plastic and animal byproducts, the hot dog cart appears, waiting to satisfy the cravings of wasted 20 year olds. I mean it's like a money pit waiting to open up. So 2 till 3:30 we'll work the night shift.
We'll name is something University of Florida-y, like Swamp Dogs or something vaguely sexual like Hot Buns & Wieners, Inc. Then we'll become millionaires.
On my last blog, Ally left the following comment:
My big idea was... to serve frozen/umbrella drinks from the ice cream truck. I mean, no ice cream...just alcoholic beverages. How stellar is that?? I love to drive and I love to watch drunk people so if I could make a profit off of them, all the better! All I need is a driver's license (check) and a liquor license (if drinking made it so, I would totally have that one, too). I think we could be on to something. But if I see a drink truck driving around, you'll be the first person I'll be looking at.
Now I'm thinking, perfect. This is the best duo ever. We'll park the hot dog cart right next to the ice cream truck that sells liquor and make money off the kids who just aren't ready to stop partying quite yet, but also need a snack break.
Speaking of breaks, if you steal our ideas, we'll break your toes.
What's your best 'brilliant' idea?

Uh I have definitely in the past been known to purchase a hot dog from a street vendor at 2 in the morning. I think this will definitely work on the college kids.
The hot dog cart is brilliant! In fact, there was something like that at my college, and you better believe I spent some bucks there :)
Around here, the strip club is really popular on the weekends because they are open until 5am or so. Regular bars close at 2, and everyone heads to the strip club to keep drinking (honestly, it's not that skeezy and strip club-ish on those nights). There is a guy that has a BBQ cart right outside of the club and he makes a KILLING. Nothing like a bunch of drunks stumbling out of the club and right into a food cart.
I love everything about this post. But, I will not let my mom read it. The woman who once seriously looked into her own vending machine business would certainly steal your idea - and I think a mom without toes would be creepy.
I laughed through this whole post because I just met a couple that HAVE STARTED A HOT DOG CART BUSINESS!! Lol They do not have big dreams like you though.. and I promise to NEVER speak the words about the "boozer cruiser" (you can use that if you want ill take 10%)
I'll post up a lemonade stand right next to you girls. We'll be trillionares.
O. M. G. This is BRILLIANT!!! I mean, I really do crave a frothy margarita as I'm downing a wiener. And the drunker people get, the more they spend on cheap food. But we will have to encourage moderation because the first time somebody pukes those hotdogs back up, it will be over for the hotdog business. They will never come back. There's a whole list of things that I've puked up that I can never have again.
Does it HAVE to be at the University of Florida, though? It goes against everything I believe in....
I worked at a hot dog stand one summer in Saskatchewan so, if you need any hot dog selling tips, let me know. I'll give you a freebie. Two words: Tube. Cheese.
Doesn't sound very appetizing but it sure is good.
ok, in college a friend and I had a dream similar to Ally's. But our ice cream truck would sell snakcs and munchies. We figured everyone was already drunk and high, so why not start driving around from 9-2 each night in a college town.
Pipedreams...
Just this weekend on the float trip, we were discussing the need for Jaeger Bomb-pops!
How creative. I have been thinking of opening my own cafe and I have the "What If" jitters. I am so glad to see that you are really doing your homework.
I will take mine with red onions, relish, krout and cheese please!
This is too funny! My uncle who's still in WV was thinking of opening a hot dog place!!! Hahahahahaha
How are you not the richest person on the planet yet? Seriously. Soon enough you are going to have enough money to buy your own island and you better let me come visit it.
I may need to move to FL if you guys start this up. I can do all the toe breaking.
OK, so i LOLed at a few places in this post.
First, I came across that same photo when I was looking for hot dog carts a couple months ago for a C-Dog award post.
Second, I could totally help build your hot dog brand, being a Chicago Dog lover, and all.
I LOVED your idea of it to hit the streets like an angel at 3 am when the bars close.
But you'd need a proper tagline. Cuz Taco Bell has its late night slogan. What could the 3 am hot dog slogan be?
