They forgot to invite Shania Twain to the Olympics

So, you guys, the Olympics!

Friday night we watched most of the Opening Ceremonies but I was so tired that I fell asleep during the athlete parade (I KNOW! Hard to believe after all the hype and excitement I exuded the other day). It was probably the wild and crazy loaded-with-carbs early Valentine's Day Dinner we had just gotten back from eating.

Aside: We decided to do V-Day on Friday night instead of Sunday (because nothing says "I Love You" more than waiting 2 hours for a table and then getting poor service from a harried, overworked, bitter college student taking our order on the actual day). It was good. Then we went to Cold Stone to grab ice cream for desert and all the teenage kids stared at us because we were all dressed up.

*stepping up on my soapbox* Why don't people dress up for nice dinners anymore? When did gym shorts and holey t-shirts become fine dining apparel? I'm not talking McDonalds here, I'm talking $30-bucks-for-a-4-oz-steak-are-you-out-of-your-mind? kind of places. *stepping back down*

THEN we rushed in (and by rushed I mean walked slowly in the door, put on our PJs and proceeded to fall into a carb coma) and started the Opening Ceremony. I was about 2 hours behind everyone, so I had to stay off Twitter. I did get a text from a friend who said, "What's up with all those Indians!?" and I was all, "India has a strong showing at the Winter Olympics? Who knew". And she said, "You'll see."

Boy, did I ever see. I texted her back with, "Oh, THOSE kinds of Indians!"

But before it even started, Tom Brokaw got all up in our business about how amazing Canada is. Hubby and I looked at each other and said, "We need to go to Canada STAT."

So first, 15,00 (approximately) Indians danced around and then that kid's all running and flying and splashing people, and then there was the freaking ginormous polar bear and the fake mountain with the crazy fake snowboarders that got Shawn White all hot and bothered, and then the devil having a fiddle face-off with himself in canoe, kicking all sorts of ass. And OH THE FIDDLING, the punk-rock tapdancing fiddlers, like are you kidding me? That's awesome. Truly awesome.

Lest we forget SLAM POETRY Y'ALL. Slam poetry about how nice Canadians are; the most legendary slam poetry in the history of the world.

And at some point, Bryan Adams sang a song about drums with Nelly Furtado who is a stealth Canadian. Do you know who else is Canadian? Ryan Reynolds *lick, purrrr*.

(We won't mention the torch lighting fiasco. It's OK, Canada, that stage was probably built by AMERICANS trying to ruin your night.)

I personally thought it was very entertaining. Since then I've heard haters hatin' on it, and I just want to say to them SHUT YOUR MOUTH WHEN YOU'RE TALKING TO ME and also, your MOM hates the opening ceremonies! Which then I realize makes no sense but saying mean things about the Opening Ceremonies puts me into a word-rage and I can't control what comes out of my mouth. I mean the Canadians tried so hard and they are so nice and get made fun of so much; making fun of the Opening Ceremony is like punching a kitten for being so cute -- rude and unnecessary and what the heck is wrong with you, punching a kitten? Low life.

I'll go ahead and proclaim this blog as a Canada Loving Zone. Maybe I'll even make a button for it.

On the way to work this morning I was trying to find some good tunage and landed on XM Prime Country (country music from the 90s) and Shania Twain came on, just fiddiling like there is no tomorrow and I had an ephiphany: I totally get Shania Twain and her obsession with fiddles. And it's only taken, like, 15 years. SHE'S CANADIAN.

Look at that guy fiddling up a freaking storm of awesomeness. I bet he's Canadian, too. Everything makes so much more sense now.

Have y'all enjoyed the Olympics so far?

Ok so I wrote a really long response before and got this terrible error message, so here is what my before comment said in brief:

1. OMG DID YOU SEE THE WHALES?

2. I yelled at the TV when women's moguls was on.

3. Apolo Ono should wear a shirt like never.

I think it would have been Awesomer if Robin Sparkles of How I Met Your Mother fame perfermed. I mean she is Canadian after all.

this deserves a comment.

first of all, i live in a bubble so had no idea the olympics were even on. psh. <-----retarded

second of all, i watched long enough for the US to come in, judge their outfits suitable, and then i flipped back to the E! channel.

having said all that, i agree with the statement on Canadians. they are friendly, appear harmless, and are far happier than any peoples should be for living in a cold climate.

Sadly, I fell asleep during part of the opening ceremonies, too.

I thought that Celine Dion would sing. Isn't she Canadian??

Cathy said... Reply to comment

This is awesome. I love how much you love the olympics!

Also, what IS he the deal with not getting dressed up anymore? Dang it, I'm gonna start wearing skirts out to dinner from now on.

I once drove through a large part of Canada. We went from MN to Maine via Canada. JT got us lost while I was sleeping because he can't read French, which is understandable, but at the time I was pissed.

*ahem* ... Ok... Where do I start...
1. totally up there on the soap box with you about dressing up for dinner. Ripped sweatpants and a dirty t shirt are not acceptable. It drives me crazy...
2. And - I cannot stress this point enough... CANADA IS AWESOME! I love living here. You could not pay me enough to move out of Canada.
3. Yes, Canadians are polite - I do say please and thank you a million times a day as does everyone around me.
3. It's not that cold here. Some parts of Canada get VERY cold - as do some parts of the states. On the West coast however it is very mild temperatures. We have not had any snow at all this year, and the years that it does snow it is very little and doesn't stick around.
4. I don't like Shania Twain, sorry, but I dont. And how great was KD Lang? She totally killed it.
5. Yes, there are a lot of fiddlers on the East coast.
6. I dont like Celine Dion either.
7. Yes, we are relatively harmless. We don't carry guns which is a plus.
I guess thats enough. I've said my piece.
Except that we don't live in Igloos, and Yes, we had to have snow flown in as it doesn't snow on the west coast - mild temperatures.

Dood. I'm a conscientious protester of the Olympics (I believe no one should be subjected to that level of boredom and lack of good television programming), but you seriously just got me all hyped about the Opening Ceremony, and I totes didn't watch at all.
That sounds awesome.

I LOVED the Opening Ceremony and now want to go to Canada too! I will most likely write a blog on it by the end of the week with all my favorites! And I will definately need to have one of those Canadian Buttons if you are making one!

I was so tired during the opening ceremonies I couldn't keep up with it! lol! But now I've got a recap. Thanks for the good laugh. :-)

*shaking fist*

jessalyn said... Reply to comment

yeah i can't really get into it too much- i will flip by and watch a few minutes, but i can't sit and watch it all night. short attention span.

also, i hate when people are at a nice restaurant not dressed appropriately. cape cod is the capital of tourists roll of the beach & go straight to a fancypants restaurant. um no. not ok.

You. Freaking. Rock.

Dewd. I was totally supposed to catch the Olympics but errr.... some crazy stuff happened and I woke up with bottles everywhere passed out next to a guy wearing nuffin but a jockstrap and lemme just say, it scared the hellouttame.

Ok not really, I'm a wee bit preggers and so not partying but it sounded so much better than admitting I am a total loser and missed the olympics and I dont even know why. Pfft. I suck. But who doesn't suck? CANADIANS! Yeah, I agree with you there girl! They rock!

Great blog! Stopped over from the Lady Bloggers :)

Hey - stopping by from Lady Blogger and wanted to say we are going to Canada in May and totally excited about it - all this Olympic hype is helping. I hope it doesn't raise the plane ticket price though . . .

I didn't watch the opening ceremony, but a polar bear? A fiddler in a canoe? That sounds hilarious in a really good way.

Rachel said... Reply to comment

The whales were really cool.

The fiddlers were weird, but really good!

You are funny!

I really like the opening ceremonies and the Olympics have been fun so far! I always love the winter Olympics better than the summer ones.

Okay, so it is time for the American living in Canada to chime in!! I have to agree with everything that itsybitsyknitsy said (except for her choice of music…I love Shania, but KD Lang? Yuck!) I thought the Opening Ceremonies were a good representation of what Canada is all about. I do wish they had shown a bit more “prairie” stuff. I don’t think the boy running through the fields was very representative of Cowboy country where I live (Calgary, for those who are wondering). The tricky thing is that Canada is so diverse…it is nearly impossible to sum up such a great place in one show.
I highly recommend that everyone come visit this great place!! Just know that no two places in Canada are alike, so come for a while if you want to see what “True Canada” is all about!!!
As for people not dressing up at nice restaurants, I 100% agree…SHOW SOME PRIDE PEOPLE!!! Perhaps people think that if they can watch the Food Network at home in their jammies, that they can go out and eat at nice restaurants in their jammies too?? Since restaurants don’t have smoking sections anymore, perhaps they should start asking clients, “Showered or Not Showered”!!!
Okay, I think I’ve said enough…but just one more thing…congrats on being the first Featured Lady Blogger on the Lady Blogger Society!!! How exciting!!!

(Okay, so I just realized that this comment is way more interesting that my entire blog!! Off to revamp things!!!)

Jenny Brown said... Reply to comment

OK, totally with you on the dressing up to go out to dinner.....what's up with everyone wearing pajama's now adays, anyway? Doesn't anyone take the time to do something with themselves anymore - before going out in public?

Sorry, I'm not much of an 'Olympics' fan....so I didn't watch the opening ceremonies.....I just channel surf and catch a glimpse of who's winning every now and then.

Congrats on being the featured blogger at "The Lady Bloggers", by the way....Enjoy your moment! :):)

I love Shania Twain! I grew up listening to her music.

I agree with you on waiting on Vday for a table at a place to eat. We did ours on Saturday around 5pm. It wasn't crowded and it was great.

Congrats on your Lady Blogger showcase! Girl, you're rockin' it! Keep it up, the Canadians would love to have good PR like yours!

Being a Canadian in the US - I can totally understand your post - and YES you do need to get to Canada STAT.. but know that it will take several trips and several years to see all of it ... but totally worth it!!!

As for the olympics, I have to say that I totally slammed a Toronto Star writer in my blog today about dissin' athletes... but otherwise having a great time with it!

Brianne said... Reply to comment

I missed the opening
ceremony too!

And as for dinner attire.....I love to go out to eat and get dressed up. If I did not, I would never get dressed up. I miss the days(not that I was alive then) when people got dressed up to go to the movies. Now you barely see people looking nice at Broadway shows.

Anyway- checking you out from The Lady Bloggers!

Hi! Checking you out from Lady Bloggers. Would it be horrible if I admitted that I haven't watched more than 10 seconds of the Olympics?

Hi there sister Laday Blogger. Congrats on the recognition and great blog. I too am blogging about the Olympics. Love your style.

I tried to watch the opening ceremonies but missed much of it due to the craziness that surrounds me every friggin day.

I did watch curling for about 5 minutes this afternoon till my son protested and turned the tv off.

Amanda @ It's Blogworthy said... Reply to comment

Salt - YES the whales! how could I forget them? Ono should wear a shirt less than never.

JM - So true. A little "Let's Go To The Mall" would have fit right in.

Speaking from the crib - *gasp* wouldn't it be awesome for the E! people to be there? Like Ryan and Guiliana interviewing people as they came in? Kick ass!

Tootie - I'm shocked Celine wasn't there! She's like, all Canada all the time.

Cathy - I'm a SUCKA for the Olympics, dude. I'm so jealous of your Canadian adventure, but I totally would have been pissed, too.

Itsy - I used to rock some Celine Dion when I was younger, but after hearing "my heart will go on" about 4 billion times that one year, I'm pretty much over it. I'd fit in in Canada because I speak the language of "nice".

Sarah - Don't go YouTubeing it or anything, my description pretty much is the best summation of it. Except maybe go YouTube the slam poetry.

Mariah - Can't wait to read about your Olympics shenanigans!

Kimberly - I wish they weren't so late! I forgot to mention that I actually finished watching them the next night...I'm LAME. Thanks for visiting. :)

Kiera - YES!!!! Another victory!!

Jessalyn - I would punch those tourists in the face. It's so rude. The worst thing at beaches is when people roll up in their bathing suit ONLY. I don't care if you were at the beach -- but some clothes on.

M - no YOU rock for visiting.

Mesina - Thank you! And there's no shame in missing things because you're cookin' a baby, i mean my excuse was eating too much. Really? I'd take missing it because I was preggo any day.

FranticMommy - It was lovely reading your blog, and thanks for stopping by mine! I'll definitely stop back by!

Keri - Thank you for reading! I appreciate the support, you dont' even know how much!

Missy - So the Olympics are just a big tease for your trip...NICE!

Kelly - GIGANTIC lighted up polar bear and fiddler with DEVIL HORNS. *sigh*

Bloggin' - I totally forgot to mention the whales..they were also amazing, agreed!

RebeccaJo - Thank you for the visit! I now related Canada with Ryan Reynolds, maybe that's why I'm so enthused about it.

Shana - My sympathies to you. Wal-E was good but not a million times good!

Krysten - Yeah, during the Winter ones I think they are my fav and then during the Summer ones -- THOSE are my fav! Thanks for stopping by!

sGiles - I didnt' even realize there WAS a cowboy country (as you call it). Man, that's awesome! I wasn't sure what that part was even about. Good call -- shower or no shower! ha!

Jenny - Thank YOU for stopping by. And yes, I never wore PJs out, especially to nice places. Hell, I didn't even wear them to semi-nice places!

Margaret - If I remember correctly, the closing ceremonies has some presentations from the next country to host, so we can get all judgy and compare them to Canada. :)

Kena - Vday dinner is SO not worth the hype! I'd rather stay in and then go out when it's not so crowded!

Gayle - Thank you! You're very sweet to say that (Canada, hint hint, I'll totally blog about you more if you pay me).

Acting Balanced - I'm going now to read, I adore Olympics posts!

Brianne - I totally agree! My hubby NEVER dresses up unless I force him to on our "date nights".

A New Mom - THANK YOU! Hope you enjoyed!

Angelina - Not horrible. Except YOU ARE DEAD TO ME. Just kidding. :) We actually haven't watched much since Saturday. It's a BIG time commitment and we had other things to watch (namely, basketball and the Bachelor).

Trudie - Thanks! It was quite an honor!

Freddae - Thank you very much! I'll be over to visit your blog too (love Olympics stuff).

Tracie - Safe to say he won't be a Winter Olympian, then? :)

Hey Amanda, congrats on the featured blogger award!!!

Also, I too am Canadian, please and thank you. I do not live in an igloo, eh; however, I do believe that we are all nice and friendly and are harmless also...

perhaps Canada is just a really big cool section of the World Zoo...don't feed the Canadians, they are harmfull and polite; however, they are certainly more calm that ____(insert said country)___...lol

anyhow, as for the Olympics, the slam poetry was great I thought and KD Lang rocked the balls outta her performance; however, I too feel as if some other prominant Canadian people could have had a part in this amazing honour. (I added the u for y'all)..

I would be proud to have a Canadian's welcome badge on my blog too..if you make one, please let me know!

Anyhow, All the best, I look forwared to reading more!!

Hey there! Thanks for this great post! As a Canadian, I really loved your take. I found you at Lady Bloggers, and since this is a Canada Friendly Zone, I will totally be back. Will check back for the button - have been looking for a Canadian Flag button for my blog, but we're a bit behind the times up here, and may need our Southern neighbours to step in and lend a hand. We'll all be very polite and greatful about it. It's just our way. Also, I did my own take on the Opening Ceremonies, from a Canuck perspective. If anyone wants to check it out, it's here:
