What is it with me and weird interactions with restaurant workers?
Living in a college town is always a treat because you have a wide variety of young, awkward students trying to make a couple bucks in the middle of their busy schedules of going to class, drinking and taking naps. They are experts at only one thing: uncomfortable conversations.
University of Kentucky is playing today and we decided to get pizza at Papa Johns. I went to pick up the pizza in my UK shirt and hat and the following conversation occurred with the young fella behind the counter:
Me: Hi, I'm picking up a pizza for Austin?
Worker: Ok, that'll be $10.67. So, is Kentucky playing today?
Me: Yes, they are.
Worker: Who are they playing?
Me: Auburn.
Worker: Cool. I'm looking forward to the Vikings game tomorrow.
Me: Oh yeah. I guess we might watch that, too. [which is of course, me making conversation]
Worker: Oh, you watch sports? Some girls don't like to watch sports. I mean women. I mean females. I mean ladies.
Me: Yeah, well I usually read while my husband is watching.
Worker: Like what?
Me: ....!?
Worker *blink*
Me: You mean, what do I read?
Worker: Yeah...
Me: Magazines, usually. US Weekly. You know, gossip magazines.
Worker: So, like, you get to find out what Angelina Jolie is up to.
Me: [laughing] Right, who got married, who broke up, who's on drugs, who lost weight.
Worker: [laughing] Who died!
Me: Um, yeah?
Worker: Ok, have a great day! Go Auburn!
Was he trying to hit on me, or just doesn't know how to have a normal interaction with another human?

I'd go with, a little from column A, a little from column B.
haha!!! gotta love the awkward conversations with the young'ns. ;) I've found myself having some strange dialogue with the Target employees, myself. Of course, if I ever shopped anywhere else I'd probably have them there too ;) I never have them with the Wal-Mart people when I go there...mostly because they don't even bother to look at me while I go through the line.
Papa John's is the only pizza place here in Roch that will deliver to us. We are on the outer limits of town, a mile from Target, but everyone else thinks we're "too far out" and not in a good way. We live in a newish but HUGE development, and they could probably get here faster than they could to some other parts of town they deliver in. Strange. But at least we like their pizza okay. Do you guys have Papa Murphy's pizza? the take and bake one? We like going there, it's not too far out of the way after work.
I could even feel the awkwardness just reading the convo. I don't know...I think maybe he was hitting on you but the fact that he said, "Go Auburn" which is the team against yours..makes me wonder.
What a strange little worker.
this is a lesson on how not to flirt! especially after you told him you had a husband and he continued! plus it was major problem that he said "go auburn!" when you definately had a uk shirt on! haha
My odd interactions have been with Wal-Mart clerks/cashiers!
A Wal-Mart electronics clerk once lectured me -- hatefully -- about software piracy. Dude, I'm so sorry I didn't see your badge underneath the blue suit!
Then, I was with a friend of mine down south who was scared to freakin' death she was pregnant. So, if a woman is buying a home pregnancy test kit, there's a really good chance she's hoping for a negative! The cashier saw the test kit and....
Cashier: Oh! Are you hoping for a yes?! *Googly smiles*
Friend: Uh, no.
Cashier: Oh, but you'd love it if it were a yes. I have three kids, and they're the greatest. Trust me, you'd love it.
Friend: That's nice, but no. (Can I just get my EPT and get outta here!)
OMG! I do that. I mean, I'm the awkward one. I have a voice in my head saying, "STFU. STFU. Walk away. Walk away. Seriously. STOP talking."
That voice, unfortunately, has no control over my mouth.
sounds like a creeper to me!!
