Is it too early to make resolutions?

Do y'all realize we only have, like, three more weeks left of this decade? I really can't believe it.

I just noticed this fact because it's 8 days into December and I just turned my calendar.

Normally I don't care much about New Year's Eve. It's just another day day off. I have never felt significantly different as the clock strikes Midnight. Ten years ago, when we all thought Y2K was bringing mass destruction and chaos, that computers would either shut down or come alive and eat us all, I was spending the evening with my ex-boyfriend and his friends. It seems like a million years ago. Y2K came and went and our computers are fine, albeit the one I'm on now is so incredibly slow that I'm forced to believe it was brought over on the Mayflower.

Since then, so much has changed. Of course, things change in the course of a decade. I wonder if I'll look back on the first decade of 2000 and see the most substantial period of change in my life. Right now it seems that way. The Y2K boyfriend and I broke up. I got a Bachelor's Degree. I spent several years finding myself. I met new friends; I lost old friends. I got old friends back. I met my husband. I got another degree. I got married. I started my first job. I bought a car. I lost a job.

"I" became "we". We adopted animals and buried animals. We made the biggest move of our lives. We bought our first house. We made it a home. We finally became satisfied and happy with our lives. It only took 10 years.

Now I'm thinking about the next decade that'll be here before we know it. It's going to bring my 30th birthday. I'm not scared of 30, but I'm thinking about my attitude in my first 30 year and how I'd like to change it for my second 30 years.

I think sometimes I really care too much. I'm a doormat. I'm a "Yes Woman". Yes, I'll volunteer for that. Yes, I'll help. Yes, I'll take on another project that I probably can't handle. Yes, I agree. Sometimes I do it out of love  for the person I'm helping. Sometimes it's out of obligation. Sometimes I do things to put it on my evaluation at work. I have to admit, sometimes I do things so I can call in a favor some other time.

But you know, there are times I do things for someone and don't' get anything back. Not a "good job" or an "I appreciate you" or even a "thank you". Not that I expect it, but it is nice. And when you continuously do things for others and put their happiness above yours and still get nothing in return -- well that's a problem. I'm tried of internalizing my feelings when I put myself out there to help someone and I'm let down. I just don't want to spend another decade like that. It's unhealthy, and my next 30 years are gonna be legendary!

So there's my first New Decade's resolution: Don't be a doormat. Do what is right and good, but don't sacrifice your own feelings to do it.

Of course I also want to lose 10 pounds and save enough money to go to Italy.

What are your New Year's resolutions?
